How To Install An Additional Circuit Breaker Box

Having an extra circuit breaker box in your home can be a lifesaver when it comes to providing reliable electrical service throughout your home. But if you don’t know how to install one correctly, the consequences could be disastrous. Whether you’re adding a new circuit or replacing an old one, it’s important to follow these steps for installing an additional circuit breaker box safely and correctly.

Before getting started, turn off all power to the existing breaker box, check that the power is off with a voltage tester, and unplug any electronics connected to the circuit. Then, locate a suitable spot for the new box, such as a basement or garage. You should also make sure that there is enough clearance around the box to allow you to access the circuit breakers and wiring.

Once you’ve found a spot for your new breaker box, you’ll need to mount it to the wall. Use a level to make sure it’s properly aligned and then securely attach the box to the wall using screws, bolts, or nails. Then, it’s time to connect the wiring. Start by running a wire between the new box and the existing breaker box and attach it to both panels using a junction box.

Next, you’ll need to run a wire from the existing box to the circuit breaker. Begin by connecting the white wire to its corresponding neutral terminal and then attach the black wire to its corresponding hot terminal. Finally, connect the ground wire to the ground terminal. Once the wires are connected, turn on the power and test the new circuit.

You may also need to add a new circuit breaker. To do this, disconnect all power to the panel, remove the cover, and find the correct size breaker for the new circuit. Then, align the breaker with its appropriate slot and press it into place until it snaps. Once the breaker is in place, replace the cover, reconnect the power, and test it.

Installing an additional circuit breaker box can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. As long as you follow the necessary safety precautions and take the time to ensure everything is properly installed, you can rest assured that your home’s electrical system will remain safe and reliable.
