An electric circuit is a closed loop of wires, components, and other devices that use electricity to accomplish a task. It is possible to control and regulate the flow of electrical energy within a circuit. With the help of a diagram, we can understand how an electric circuit works.
A basic electrical circuit consists of three components: a power source, a conductor, and a load. The power source provides the electrical energy needed to power the circuit. Sources may be batteries, generators, or a wall outlet. The conductor is a wire or other conductive material that carries electrical current through the circuit. This is usually copper wire, but other materials such as aluminum and silver may also be used. The load is the device or appliance which the electricity is meant to power. In a typical home, the load might be a light bulb, a fan, or a washing machine.
For a circuit to be complete, all three components must be connected together in a proper order. The power source, conductor, and load must form a closed loop. Think of it like a circle: the electrical energy flows from the power source, through the conductor, to the load, and back to the power source. If any part of the loop is broken, the circuit will not work.
The diagram above shows a basic electrical circuit. It consists of a battery, two wires, and a light bulb. The battery is the power source; the two wires are the conductors; and the light bulb is the load. The electrons flow from the battery, through one wire, and into the light bulb. After passing through the light bulb, the electrons travel through the other wire back to the battery, completing the circuit.
Understanding how an electric circuit works is the foundation for understanding complex electrical systems. By understanding the basics of electricity, you can build and maintain your own electrical projects.
